Once considered a hidden gem in southern travel, the secret is out and vacationers can’t get enough of Fairhope, Alabama. Despite being one of the fastest growing cities in the state, this beloved locale has managed to retain its small town feel and undeniable charm. Consistently listed in Southern Living as one of the South’s best small towns, each season brings a new opportunity for fun and exciting things to do and explore in the area. 

While some of these items are must-do’s for any time of the year, there are a few special seasonal events that are worth visiting for, and one incredible experience that only the luckiest get to partake in. 1. Take a walk down the Fairhope Municipal Pier

Considered the unofficial “town square,” the Fairhope Municipal Pier is one of the most popular landmarks in the city. It is enjoyed by visitors and locals alike for its spectacular views of Mobile Bay, large walking space, sea life, bird watching, and fishing. A trip to Fairhope just isn’t complete without at least one stroll down this scenic pier.

2. Visit the Fairhope Museum of History

Filled with exhibits celebrating the rich history of the city, the Fairhope Museum of History is free to the public and a great indoor activity for a rainy day. Follow a knowledgeable guide through each of the exhibits or explore on your own, this downtown feature is a great addition, especially for those visiting Fairhope for the first time. 

3. Bike around the city

You can easily explore most of downtown Fairhope on foot, but for a fun way to take in the natural beauty of the area, rent a bike or bring your own and go for a ride down the scenic route. Lined with moss-draped oak trees and spectacular views of Mobile Bay, it is a welcome respite to a busy day.

4. Try a Fairhope Float

While we love a good ice cream cone from Mr. Gene’s Beans Ice Cream and Coffee Shop, this special blend of coffee, frozen yogurt, and whipped cream is a favorite treat among the local Fairhopers and perfect for any time of the day. For the perfect salty and sweet combination, grab a bag of specialty popcorn to go!

5. Shop at the local boutiques

Fairhope is well known for its charming downtown area and expansive selection of boutique shops. Whether searching for a designer handbag, eclectic gift, or local souvenir to commemorate your trip, there truly is a shop for every taste and style. If making a day out of it, plan for Monday through Saturday as many shops are closed or have limited hours on Sunday.

6. Watch the firing of the cannon

The Grand Hotel Resort and Spa is one of the oldest and most loved hotels in the area. Hotel reservations are not required to tour the property and it’s one of our favorite spots for strolling and a good meal. If you visit in the afternoon, you can join in on the daily cannon firing followed by tea and cookies in the Grand Hall.

7. Admire the local art

The downtown area is home to several art galleries with beautiful displays by local Fairhope artists. Guests are welcome to browse these curated collections in a variety of mediums or make a purchase for a lasting souvenir.

8. Play a round of golf

Rolling fairways, impeccable greens, and historic oak trees line the courses at our renowned golf courses. There are courses available for all levels of experience and we can’t think of a better thing to do on a beautiful spring day.

9. Listen to music at Live at Five

One of the best Friday night activities that has become a staple in the city is the Live at Five concert series. Held at the amphitheater at Coastal Community College, this outdoor event features local musicians, food trucks, and family fun. Bring a blanket or folding chair and get ready for a good time!

10. Visit the French Quarter

While shopping is prevalent along the main streets in downtown Fairhope, the French Quarter is its own private section. This beautiful courtyard features a lovely fountain, additional shopping, and the beloved sandwich shop Panini Pete’s. Grab a plate of beignets or the famous muffaletta sandwich, as found on the 100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die list.




11. Play at the park

If you are traveling to Fairhope with kids, a stop at Fairhopers Community Park is a must. This large fenced-in park features two sections with playground equipment for younger and older children, swings, a climbing gym, musical equipment, open grassy field, sidewalks, and a pirate themed splash pad – perfect for cooling off during the warmer months!

12. See a show

Actors take to the stage to perform classic productions at Fairhope’s live performance center, Theatre 98. Grab dinner beforehand and come support our local theater company at one of the four spectacular shows put on each year.

13. Catch a sunset over Mobile Bay

Some of the most spectacular sunsets take place each evening over Mobile Bay. For a great viewing experience head over to Sunset Pointe for dinner where the sun setting is celebrated each evening with the ringing of the bell, The Grand Hotel Resort and Spa with sprawling views of the bay, or The Bluff, which provides a breathtaking view of the sun going down over Fairhope Municipal Pier.

14. Visit Weeks Bay Reserve

Along the outskirts of Fairhope is a hidden gem just waiting to be explored. The Weeks Bay Reserve Visitor Center allows guests to learn about regional plants, coastal animals, and their habitats with exhibits and live animal displays. Immerse yourself in nature as you continue on to the nature trails that weave through the marshes, wetlands, and forests.

15. Tour a Tea Plantation

The Fairhope Tea Plantation is one of the oldest tea plantations in the country. The tea farm tours are $10 per person and include a cup of tea, viewing of the farm, and discussion of tea growing and making. 

16. Take part in a jubilee

One of the most amazing experiences that takes place along the Fairhope and Eastern Shore coastlines is something that can’t be planned or purchased. If you just happen to be at the right place at the right time, make sure to have your net and camera ready for the jubilee. A true natural phenomenon that only takes place in two locations around the world, head to the shoreline to catch your bounty of fish, shrimp, crab, and memories to last a lifetime!

17. Watch a Mardi Gras parade

This seasonal celebration takes place in various cities throughout the Southeast, but we especially like Fairhope’s Mardi Gras parades for the family-friendly environment and beautifully lit backdrop of the city. Come celebrate with us and let the good times roll at the start of each new year. 

18. View the Lighting of the Trees

There is no better way to kick off the holiday season than this magical event in downtown Fairhope. Thousands of twinkling lights set the city aglow as onlookers are drizzled with snow. Children will enjoy a special visit from the North Pole’s most popular lady – Mrs. Claus. 

19. Attend a First Friday Art Walk

On the first Friday of every month shops and art galleries in downtown Fairhope stay open late for patrons to drop by for wine, snacks, and conversation. Showcasing it’s newest exhibits, the night begins at the Eastern Shore Art Center. Be sure to make your dinner reservations in advance for a full night of fun.

20. Charter a boat

Whether fishing, sailing, or simply enjoying being on the water, there is a charter boat company ready to take you and a few friends on a nautical adventure. Sail around Mobile Bay or take to the Gulf for a deep sea fishing excursion. Either way, let one of our local captains be your guide for an exciting day on the water. 




21. People watch

There are plenty of great spots to relax and take in the city, but our favorite people watching locale is on the cozy sofas at Red or White Wine and Gourmet Center. It’s large picturesque window overlooking De La Mare is the perfect spot to unwind and catch up with friends. 

22. Try an olive oil tasting

Give your taste buds a treat at The Happy Olive in downtown Fairhope. Featuring a wide variety of specialty oils, vinegars, and gourmet mustards, pop in for an impromptu tasting or call ahead for a private group setting. 

23. Be an extra in a movie

With its charming downtown and natural scenic beauty, Fairhope has been a popular spot for filmmakers. If you don’t make the cut in the film, that’s OK, keep your eyes open on the streets as the biggest named stars have been known to make an appearance at the local shops and restaurants.

24. Explore Nall's studio

Few people are known by one name only and this world renowned artist takes residence in Fairhope. Graciously allowing guests into his downtown studio, visitors are able to view his vast collection of works and sculptures and if timed just right, you might even meet the artist Nall himself. 

25. See a storybook castle

Tucked away just on the edge of the bustle of downtown shops and restaurants are Fairhope’s very own storybook castles. These enchanting homes appear to be right out of a fairy tale. While picture taking is common, please remember that contrary to appearance, these are in fact private residences.

26. Go on a Food Tour

If you have never been to the city of Fairhope before or are looking for a fun day date as a couple or with a group of friends, Fairhoper’s highly recommends the Taste of Fairhope food tour. The tour is a fantastic way to get a taste of the city all in one afternoon. If you have a sweet tooth, give the Sweet Tour Alabama a try!

27. Visit the Arts and Crafts Festival

One of the most celebrated events in the area, the Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival draws thousands to the Eastern Shore each spring. With a wide variety of mediums, over 200 of the finest artisans take to the streets of downtown Fairhope to showcase and sell their best works.

28. Take a walk on the beach

Within walking distance of the Fairhope Municipal Pier is the picturesque and peaceful North Beach Park. This lovely park features a paved walking trail, white sandy beach with exceptional views of Mobile Bay, pier, playground equipment, pavilions, benches, and duck pond. 

29. Go antiquing

Whether you are looking for a hand-woven Oriental rug or a century-old European mirror, Fairhope has a large and unique selection of antique shops to peruse. These specialty shops are home to individual curators as well as large antique shops with individual booths. The selection changes frequently so check back often if you have a specific item in mind or speak with one of the shop owners who might have connections to find exactly what you are searching for.

30. Take an art class

Creative talents join together to expand on skills or learn some new ones at the Eastern Shore Art Center. Offering an array of art courses in a variety of mediums, these popular classes are tailored for all skill levels. If you would like to give pottery a try, visit The Kiln Studio for a variety of private or group classes.




31. Attend a concert on The Bluff

Overlooking Mobile Bay and the Fairhope Municipal Pier, a concert at Henry George Park on The Bluff is a delightful way to listen to hear local musicians in a cool and casual setting. Mark your spot early with a folding chair and picnic dinner for a night of music under the stars.

32. Take a spa day

Relax with a manicure or pedicure for a nice break in the day or carve out a full day of rejuvenation at one of the exceptional spas or beauty salons in Fairhope. 33. Meet your favorite author

Local independent bookstore Page and Palette features both regionally and nationally recognized authors for speaking engagements and book signings. Grab a brew at the popular Latte Da coffee shop or a cocktail at The Book Cellar, both connected to the bookstore. These regular events are a superb way to meet your favorite authors in a casual setting. 

34. Go on a pub crawl

Creative cocktail masters, live music, an Irish pub, and Santa Claus dropping the beat are just a few of the exciting nightlife offerings at Fairhope’s downtown bars and pubs. Laid back and relaxed, hip and trendy, or the ultimate dive bar, each locale brings its own unique style for a fun night night of libations with friends. Start at one bar and make your way downtown or find your new favorite to visit time and time again. 

35. Take the trail

Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice! The Eastern Shore Trail is a fantastic way to enjoy the great outdoors and the many scenic spots along Fairhope and the surrounding areas. Starting at the Gator Boardwalk in Daphne and ending at the Weeks Bay Bridge, this 22-mile trail features a variety of terrain and can be explored by foot or bicycle. 

36. Be a kid again

If you ask any child which store is their favorite in downtown Fairhope, Fantasy Island Toys will be at the top of the list. Besides finding the perfect gift or toy, this beloved toy store has a play space for small children and fun activities throughout the summer to keep all ages entertained. Drop by to browse around or call ahead and have your gift wrapped and ready for pickup.  

37. Try a flight

The Fairhope Brewing Company is Fairhope’s premiere local beer creators serving up unique flavors of craft beer in a casual setting. Whether you prefer something light and crisp, dark and bold, or a fruity concoction, there’s a brew for you in this southern taproom.

38. Go on a walking tour

The city of Fairhope hosts several walking tours highlighting a specific part of the city. Both entertaining and educational, a local guide will lead the tour with historical facts and stories about the development of Fairhope, including the iconic downtown business section, the scenic beach and park, and the historic cemetery.

39. Take a coffee break

We’d be hard pressed to choose one as our favorite, but these downtown coffee shops all carry a dedicated following of locals lining up for their daily brews. Bold coffee flavors, specialty lattes, and homemade pastries while visiting with friends is one of our favorite ways to start the day.

40. Stop and smell the roses

Or tulips. Or pansies. Or whatever else is in season. The flower-lined streets are always in bloom and the city gardeners take meticulous care to maintain the multitudes of colorful flower beds with every new season. 

41. Check the time

Don’t forget to take a picture at the iconic Fairhope clock located at the intersection of Fairhope Avenue and Section Street. 42. Spend an Evening by the fire pits

Listen to the piano player entertain guests inside or gather around one of the many fire pits overlooking Mobile Bay as you sip cocktails at the historic Bucky’s “birdcage” Lounge. Located at The Grand Hotel Resort and Spa, this scenic night spot is a longtime favorite for guests and visitors.

43. Check out a film

Once a year the Fairhope Film Festival takes to the streets of downtown Fairhope with world class award winning films shown over the weekend. Filled with viewings and parties, this exciting event allows guests to meet the actors and producers who bring these films to life. If you won’t be in Fairhope that weekend, no worries. Drop by the Fairhope Film Festival headquarters for one of the monthly movies shown in the private theater.

44. Try the fresh catch

Located along the coast of Mobile Bay, Fairhope’s casual and fine dining restaurants pride themselves in using locally sourced seafood straight from the Gulf of Mexico. Pair these dishes with fresh produce from our local farmers and you’ll see why these farm-to-table meals are some of the best in the South.

45. Make Sunday Brunch reservations

Possibly our favorite meal of the week, Sunday brunch is the perfect way to end the weekend. For something a little more casual, try one of the delicious specialties at Thyme on Section, Sunset Pointe, Tamara’s Downtown, or Another Broken Egg. For a finer dining experience, make reservations at the Fairhope Inn and Restaurant or head over to The Grand Hotel Resort and Spa for the popular Sunday jazz brunch.

46. Pick up a souvenir

There are local shops galore carrying a variety of unique and eclectic trinkets perfect for commemorating your trip. Have you even “been there and done that” if you don’t have the t-shirt to show for it? If city attire is your preference, drop by The Fairhope Store for beautifully designed t-shirts, koozies, stickers, and other souvenirs that celebrate the city.

47. Visit the library

Sure almost every city has one, but Fairhope’s Public Library is pretty special. Sitting in the heart of downtown, it is a great spot to explore, take a break from the heat, and catch up on the newest novel. Speaking engagements and other events are held there as well, including children’s activities and story time.

48. Find a secondhand treasure

Whether looking for designer clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry, books, or home decor, there are several shops in downtown Fairhope that specialize in bringing the best consignment items to the market at a deep discount. Being green couldn’t be easier when you give new life to a previously discarded good. It’s like a win-win for everyone!

49. Grab a milkshake

Featured on Shark Tank, it doesn’t get more over-the-top than the milkshakes and sundaes at The Yard Milkshake Bar. Try a specialty flavor or build your own with toppings, syrups, and options galore. These super sweet treats are large enough to share, but if you don’t, we won’t tell.

The charming architecture, lovely floral displays, and scenic beauty are the perfect backdrop for your southern vacation.
