The Bluff at Henry George Park

Fairhope Avenue and Magnolia Avenue
Fairhope, Alabama 36532

Description

Having one of the best views in Fairhope, The Bluff at Henry George Park sits high above the Fairhope Municipal Pier overlooking the beautiful Mobile Bay. This large charming park is open to the public and an ideal spot for picnics, walking, and boat watching. While the official name is the Henry George Bluff Park, it is commonly referred to as simply, The Bluff in Fairhope.

With plenty of room to spread out, The Bluff is also the host of many local events and it is not uncommon to see exercise enthusiasts walking, running, practicing yoga, or taking a class atop this scenic locale. There are large trees providing shade to many parts of the park and the picnic benches at the bluff’s edge are the prime spot for catching the most breathtaking sunsets over the bay.

There are many statues spread across the city of Fairhope. Along with it’s natural beauty, The Bluff is home to two of these local statues. The first is a nod to Henry George, the park’s namesake, and his theories on labor and single tax on which the city of Fairhope was founded.

The second statue is a veterans memorial statue titled, “Tears of Sorrow, Tears of Joy.” This moving two-sided statue was dedicated in 2013. On one side is a bronze statue of a woman receiving a folded flag with the inscription, “On Behalf of a Grateful Nation.” On the other side is a returning soldier kneeling down to embrace his son and present him with a small flag. The names of the US military branches are inscribed along the edge of the statue to give honor to all that serve. Both statues are raised on pedestals that are covered with water to represent the tears.
