Fairhope is considered the oldest single-tax colony in the United States. Established in 1894, the original founders idealized a Utopian-like society, based on the single tax theories of economist and social reformer Henry George. The founding principle regarded land as common property. Stakeholders would essentially rent the property with a 99-year renewable lease based on the value of the land, which would provide government revenues for the community.
The name Fairhope was derived when a member stated that they had a “fair hope” of succeeding. In 1908, the Town of Fairhope incorporated into what is now the City of Fairhope. The Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, also known as the Colony still exists, but as a non-profit organization.
