In the early morning hours before sunrise on a random summer day, the residents of Mobile Bay stir with excitement as rumors spread that a jubilee is taking place. This phenomenon happens due to a lack of oxygen in the water where the sea life will slow down to preserve energy. A seafood bounty of flounder, crab, and shrimp come to the surface where residents fill up nets, buckets, and coolers with their prizes.
This natural, but unexpected event only takes place in two places in the entire world, along the shore of Mobile Bay in Alabama and Tokyo Bay in Japan. Certain conditions have to take place for a jubilee to occur, but enthusiasts can only guess when the next one will occur. Some lifelong residents have still never witnessed one, but each summer the Eastern Shore waits in anticipation for a neighboring friend to shout, “JUBILEE!”
